The clinical manifestations of congenital toxoplasmosis are complex. Most babies are asymptomatic at birth, and some of them develop retinochoroiditis, strabismus, blindness, epilepsy, psychomotor or mental retardation several months or years after birth. The clinical manifestations of the following different combinations: chorioretinitis, hydrocephalus, microcephaly, anencephaly, intracranial calcification should be considered.
The severity of acquired toxoplasmosis is different. Acute lymphadenitis is the most common in the host with normal immune function, accounting for about 90%. Immune deficiency patients such as AIDS, organ transplantation, malignant tumor (mainly Hodgkin's disease) often have significant systemic symptoms, such as high fever, macular papule, myalgia, arthralgia, headache, vomiting, delirium, encephalitis, myocarditis, pneumonia, hepatitis, gastroenteritis, etc.
Most of ocular toxoplasmosis is congenital, and the postnatal findings may be caused by congenital potential lesions. Clinically, there are blurred vision, blind spot, fear of light, pain, lacrimal overflow, central vision loss, and few systemic symptoms. After the inflammation subsided, the vision improved, but often not completely recovered. There may be vitreous opacity.
